Updates & info
Week 3...this week the Y5 classes have been out and about, visiting York Mosque as part of their work on islam; and York Art Gallery to see the current William Morris exhibition. The first session of Rock Steady Music took place last Friday and went really well, with very excited children! At the moment as the teacher owen and the children get into the rotuine, the sessions have been running a bit late so please be patient when your child's band has the last timeslot.
Bags Please help us out with storing your children's belongings! Our space in school is very limited, and our cloakrooms and pegs just do not fit rucksack/backpack style bags as well as big winter coats! It would really help us if you would send bags that are smaller, and that either have a drawstring or a long strap that will hang down. We are finding lots of very bulky bags that take up more than 3 pegs' spaces, and have very little inside them! Thank you.
Football An exciting update from out of school, with two of our pupils having been chosen to represent Selby School District in the ESFA under 11s competition. Billy C and Sam S had their first match earlier this month, with Billy scoring the team's first ever goal. They won against Leeds Schoolboys, and move ont to the next round. Good luck!
NSPCC Online Safety session for families The video from the online safety sessions held this week can be seen here if you were not able to make it https://youtu.be/MY5NDhvVkG4
MAT merger consultation & documents This week we sent out the consultation documents about the proposed merger between STAR MAT and the South York MAT. There is a consultation event on 27.11.24 at 6pm at Tadcaster Grammar School. This will consist of a short presentation from our CEO, Ian Yapp at 6pm followed by a chance for Q and A. We expect the formal part of the event to conclude at approximately 6.30pm. This will then be followed by informal drop-in discussion opportunities from approximately 6.30pm onwards for those of you who would rather have a one-to-one discussion. Your thoughts and views are always welcome via engagement@starmat.uk ’
School applications Applications are now open for children who are due to start school in September 2025. These should be made online at https://www.northyorks.gov.uk/education-and-learning/school-admissions The deadline for these applications is Wednesday 15th January 2025. Please remember, even if your child attends our nursery, you will still need to apply for a primary school place.
Reminder: start of the day The school day starts at 8:50am and children arriving after this time are marked as 'late'. The registers close at 9:10am which means that children arriving after this time are marked as 'U' ('late after registers') which counts as an unauthorised absence.
Attendance & illness In line with the new regulations around attendance, we are now having to share attendance information with North Yorkshire on a monthly basis. This includes where children have already missed a lot of time due to illness, and where we have reason to believe they may miss 15 days or more over the year (looking at patterns in the previous year) so the attendance team can pick this up. Obviously where a child has specific medical conditions or has had surgery we are mindful of this, but we do have children who have missed significant amounts of school through shorter blocks of illness which have added up to 20 or more days.
Contacting school Messages about absence, medicine, appointments & changes to after school picks ups must come through the school office either by phone 01757 704308 or email admin@bp.starmat.uk. Messages through Dojo don't work if a member of staff is absent, and also staff do not have their phones with them in the classrooms while they are working with the children so they can't always pick them up.
Term dates 2024-25 The term dates for this year are on the school website at https://brayton-cofe-primary-school.secure-primarysite.net/term-dates/
Jewellery No necklaces, bracelets, rings or other jewellery should be worn to school. If your child has earrings, these must be removed for PE sessions, or earrings can be left at home on PE days. Earrings for school should be small stud types so they don't get caught and cause any injuries.
Free school meals: save up to £450 a year Apply online at https://fisportal.northyorks.gov.uk/Synergy/fsm_prereq.aspx The application is very straightforward and there are only a few questions to answer. All the information is on the NYCC website at https://www.northyorks.gov.uk/free-school-meals
If you would like any advice or support with this, please contact the school office. We treat these matters with complete confidentiality and are always happy to help if needed.
If your child is eligible for free school meals you can also access other support, such as for visits and school holiday activity vouchers through HAF/FEAST https://northyorkshiretogether.co.uk/feast/

Whole School Attendance
Whole-school attendance has stayed steady and just above national, even as we have hit the time of year for coughs and colds...if your child is unwell we will always contact you, but unless they have a high temperature or you have been advised by the GP that they should be at home, they can come in...we have lots of tissues!
Due to the national tightening of the rules around attendance, fixed penalty notices (fines) will be followed up by North Yorkshire Council for any 10 or more sessions of unauthorised absence within a 3-year rolling period as below. Unauthorised abence includes being late after the registers have closed: of your child arrives after 9:10am (unless they have been to an appointment).
